We are often asked ‘What’s a Playsilk?’ and our answer is always the same ‘Whatever you want it to be!’ A playsilk is the ultimate open-ended toy with infinite possibilities for imaginative play.
Playsilks have long been used in Waldorf kindergartens draped over playstands as an alternative Wendy house. However, their use is not just restricted to that of a covering. Playsilks are available in a variety of sizes and colour combinations. Perhaps the easiest imagined use is in the dressing-up box.
Children from the earliest age love to dress up and often prefer to use sheets, tablecloths and faded adult clothes from charity shops rather than specially made children’s outfits. If children are given a Spiderman outfit then they can only be ‘Spiderman’ whereas a simple vibrant coloured silk allows the child’s imagination to bring a whole host of superheroes alive.
Our Silk Capes have beautiful pure satin silk ties, sewn and fixed in place so that they are easy to tie. Within a moment the child can become royalty, a mystical animal or magical being.
Silk wings are a favourite and not just with the girls. Children love to pretend to fly and can easily transform themselves into a butterfly, fairy or bird.
Giant silks encourage cooperative play and can be used to create a private playspace for several children. If you don’t have a playstand then drape the silk over a clothes horse or attach the silk to table edges or chair backs with pegs. Our giant rainbow silk remains a bestseller as children are enchanted by the silken magic of their very own rainbow house.
Why silk and not another fabric you might ask? As silk is a natural material it takes dye easily. Our Playsilks are hand-dyed using low-impact and plant-based dyes. Different techniques can be used to create unusual and beautiful effects. Because silk has a special sheerness, natural light can shine through creating a magical glow.
Silk provides a soothing tactile experience, calming hyperactive or hypersensitive children and promoting quiet focused play.
Many people feel silk is too fragile for play but our Playsilks are surprisingly robust. Silks can be hand or gentle machine washed with a suitable detergent. They are best hung up to dry naturally and may be ironed with a medium hot brisk iron if necessary.
We find many parents can’t resist Playsilks for themselves and use them around the house as decoration or even a luxurious sarong!
