Children's playthings should have timeless play value, such that they will want to pass them on to their own children one day. Open-ended toys (those that do not have just "one right use") are far better for encouraging divergent thinking and creativity in children's play. Studies show that this kind of imaginative play in early childhood provides a solid foundation for later academic learning.
